kuril dhagun, the Indigenous knowledge Centre at the State Library of Queensland hosts a variety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and cultural events. There are a number of Indigenous Knowledge Centres throughout Queensland.
Indigenous Literacy Day
Coordinated by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, Indigenous Literacy Day, aims to help raise funds to raise literacy levels and improve the lives and opportunities of Indigenous Australians living in remote and isolated regions. The Foundation together with community support helps raise funds to buy books and literacy resources for children in these communities.
Mabo Day
Mabo Day celebrations are held on 3 June each year. The day celebrates the historic High Court judgement which upheld Eddie Mabo's claim that Murray Islanders held native title to land in the Torres Strait.
NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week celebrations highlight the rich and diverse culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the First Australians. National Aboriginal and Islander Children's Day celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and reinforces their connection to their own culture and history.
National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week is celebrated across Australia each year between 27 May and 3 June. The start and end dates commemorate 2 significant milestones in Australian history—the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. Each year the Queensland Government holds Reconciliation Awards, along with many other community activities, to foster reconciliation.
